At Gateway to Hope, our volunteers are the very heart of our mission. In this series, we celebrate the individuals whose dedication makes everything possible. Today, we are thrilled to shine a spotlight on Caesar, a man whose former career took him across the oceans, but whose commitment now anchors him right here in our lot.
Before he directed traffic for us, Caesar commanded order on a global scale in the shipping industry. Now retired, he brings that same expertise to Gateway to Hope as the undisputed master of traffic control. You’ll find him at his post, calmly directing a steady stream of vehicles with unwavering patience, whether under a blazing sun, in a downpour, or against a winter chill.
His calm, collected presence is a gift to our community. A devoted man of God and a sports fan with a friendly disposition, he’s also a father, a husband of Sheila (our wonderful “behind-the-scenes lady”).
He even brings a touch of game-day energy to our breaks! When the volunteers have a short respite, they know it’s almost time to return to work when Caesar comes through the room and announces, like a seasoned coach, a “two-minute warning.”
For the many people who wait patiently for hours, Caesar’s role is pivotal. There is a special, palpable joy that ripples through the line the moment they hear his sharp whistle and see his deliberate, clear hand gestures, a signal that grants permission to move forward. It is more than just an instruction; it is a movement forward in hope! He may not realize it, but with that simple sound and signal, Caesar becomes a herald of hope, making many hundreds of people happy every single Saturday morning.
However, let it be known: his gentle nature should not be mistaken for permissiveness. Try to cut the line, and you’ll quickly meet the unwavering resolve of a man who believes in fairness and order.
Caesar is more than a volunteer; he is a pillar of our community. We are profoundly grateful for his service, his spirit, and the steady hand he extends to all who pass through our gates.
Thank you, Caesar, for being a foundational part of Gateway to Hope!
