Holy Smiles and Missing Teeth… The Parking Lot Parable of the Golden Tooth

While walking through the Gateway To Hope parking lot today, a volunteer spotted something rather unusual: a set of upper dentures lying there like they had just finished an argument and walked out on somebody!   These weren’t just ordinary dentures. Oh no. One tooth proudly sported a gold crown that sparkled in the Florida sunshine like pirate treasure!

The mystery deepened as everyone suddenly became a detective:
Did somebody sneeze too hard?  Perhaps Father James morning sermon actually knocked someone’s teeth out?   Did someone leave smiling, but toothless?

At Gateway To Hope, a simple walk through the parking lot can turn into a full-fledged episode of America’s Funniest Ministries! We had to chuckle; even these false teeth made us think about life, faith, and the grace of God. Why? Because life has a way of leaving all of us with “gaps”.

Some people lose their health.
Some lose direction.
Some lose relationships, hope, confidence, or purpose.
And sometimes, if we’re being honest, we smile on the outside while quietly carrying broken places inside.

Just like missing teeth leave an empty space, life leaves holes in our hearts and spirits that we never expected. Yet, God in His mercy, never abandons us in our brokenness. He fills those gaps with love, His people, His purpose, and His grace.

That gold crown reminded us of something else. Even in what seems discarded or forgotten, there is still value. Still beauty. Still dignity. Still worth.

At Gateway To Hope, we see this every single day.

Many of our volunteers experienced and still experience gaps of their own; loneliness, grief, uncertainty, loss, or simply the feeling that something was missing in life. But, through serving others, they discover something very powerful: when you help restore hope in someone else, God often restores something in you!

A meal served with kindness.
A box of food handed to a struggling family.
A prayer whispered beside someone hurting.
A smile shared in a difficult moment.

These simple acts become “bridges across the gaps”.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

Sometimes God speaks through sermons.
Sometimes through Scripture.
And sometimes… through a set of upper teeth with a gold crown lying in a parking lot!

Only God can take something that odd and turn it into a reminder that no one is beyond hope, no life is without value, and no broken place is too empty for His grace to fill.

So if today something is missing in your life such as peace, purpose, direction, joy, or even your smile, don’t lose heart. God is in the business of restoration. At Gateway To Hope, we’ve learned something beautiful: Even in the strangest moments, God can give us a smile that never fades!
