Powered by People, Not Batteries
There’s a little secret about the people at Gateway to Hope: we aren’t actually powered by batteries.
We know—it’s a shock! But as it turns out, our backs are not made of industrial-grade steel, and the Florida sun has developed a very specific, personal grudge against our volunteer team. At 7:00 AM, we’re all sunshine and smiles. By 8:00 AM, we’ve discovered that it’s possible to sweat from our kneecaps, and by 9:00 AM, we’re fairly certain we’ve become part of the local irrigation system.
When Service Meets the Florida Sun
But the work doesn’t stop just because the humidity has reached “swimming” levels. Food still needs unloading, boxes need moving, and families need serving. So, our team keeps showing up.
Now let’s be clear: we are not complaining; we’re just human. Sometimes “giving our best” involves a brief, high-stakes meeting with a folding chair and a bottle of water.
Strength for the Work
We find our strength in the promises of Scripture:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”
— Galatians 6:9
We’re doing our absolute best to focus on that “reap in due season” part while actively trying to avoid the “fainting” part!
So, if things take a moment longer than expected, please be patient. We aren’t being lazy; we’re just recharging!
A Little Grace—and a Folding Chair

I really really appreciate all of the volunteers.. getting out in the sun like they do. I wouldn’t have enough food to eat each week if you didn’t do what you did so I could come get your food.
I see you out in that sun. And I say to myself, I don’t know how they do it in this Florida heat, but then I’m reminded that all things are possible through God. I appreciate it so much from the bottom of my heart. May the Lord bless each and everyone of you for your sacrifice to help all of us that’s in the line.
