Nuclear Subs to Living Water: La misión de Héctor

Nuclear Subs to Living Water: La misión de Héctor

For thirty-nine years, Hector’s hands performed precision welding on nuclear submarines in Groton, Connecticut. He worked in tight spaces with exacting standards, ensuring vessels could survive the crushing depths of the ocean.

Today, those same steady hands serve a different purpose at Gateway to Hope. Now retired in Ocala, far from his native Puerto Rico and the submarine yards of New England, Hector places cold bottles of water into the hands of thirsty neighbors.

The work is not so different. A submarine crew depends on critical systems to survive a hostile environment. Our community faces its own pressures: financial strain, health struggles, isolation. When Hector hands a bottle of cold water to a thirsty soul, he offers more than hydration. He offers refreshment to a spirit under pressure.

In John 4, Jesus offered a woman at a well something deeper than physical water: “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” Hector understands this. After thirty-nine years building vessels that could withstand the ocean, he now builds bridges of hope. The physical water opens doors for conversations about the Living Water that satisfies for eternity.

Hector still loves to travel and hits the gym to keep those steady hands strong. But giving back isn’t an afterthought, it’s why God brought him to Ocala and Gateway To Hope. His Puerto Rican warmth and generous spirit remind everyone he meets that they are seen, valued, and loved.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for faithful servants like Hector. May every bottle of water we share become a conduit of your grace, refreshing bodies and opening hearts to you. Amen.

Dios te bendiga! (God bless you!)
